Are Triple Bunk Beds Safe for Your Children?

For children throughout the ages – no matter how far technology has progressed, and no matter how much the latest iPad and newest video games grab their attention during the day – bunk beds remain one of the most sought-after items by children, as they imagine all the exciting possibilities it presents, for everyday use and for sleepovers.

As parents, we want to give our children what they want (most of the time) as long as it’s something they’ll use a lot, gain value from and – most importantly – it’s safe to use. Most parents have already been sold on standard bunk beds – the two-tier classic that children around the world have been using for centuries – but what about triple bunk beds?

While the design of the triple bunk bed looks about as stable as the leaning tower of Pisa – which has been standing for centuries, it’s important to note – this style of bunk bed is safe, otherwise they wouldn’t be sold on the market. However, there are certain things that need to be taken into account, if you’re thinking of getting a triple bunk bed for your child or children.

The first thing to consider, is that there are several different kinds of triple bunk beds, which can be – more or less – split into two types: triple bunk beds with three tiers, and triple bunk beds with two tiers. Essentially, a bunk bed with three single beds stacked, and a bunk bed with two single beds – or one double bed – on the bottom of the structure.

There’s obviously a little extra risk when it comes to three tier bunks, purely because of the extra height, but as long as the guard rails are reasonably high, this shouldn’t be a problem; it would be essentially impossible for your child to fall off the top bunk while they sleep. On the other hand, if your child is likely to play boisterously on top of the bed – and has been known to enjoy swinging and playing on the furniture – a good compromise is the two- tiered triple bunk bed: no extra height, but with the same number of sleeping areas, so your child can enjoy all the benefits of a triple bunk bed.
